Responsible mining has been guided by multiple, respected programmes—each with different scopes, indicators and assurance models:
- ICMM Mining Principles – the cross-industry baseline for ICMM members.
- The Copper Mark – an assurance framework for responsible production and sourcing (see its core documents).
- Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) – adopted by the Minerals Council of Australia; site-level indicators and public reporting (how it works in AU: overview).
- Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMP) – World Gold Council’s framework for gold producers.
Each raised the bar. Together, they created duplication, confusion and costly equivalency mapping—especially for smaller operators.
The CMSI response
CMSI consolidates, simplifies and scales. Led by partners across mining alliances and standards bodies, CMSI provides a single reference point for ethical business conduct, worker protections, social performance and environmental stewardship. Performance areas at a glance
CMSI organises requirements across 24 performance areas, grouped into four pillars—each assessed at three maturity levels (Towards Good Practice, Good, Leading):
- Ethical Business Practices: corporate requirements, business integrity, supply chains.
- Worker & Social Safeguards: human rights, child labour, workers’ rights, safe workplaces.
- Social Performance: stakeholder engagement, community benefits, Indigenous Peoples, grievance mechanisms.
- Environmental Stewardship: water, biodiversity, climate, tailings, pollution, closure.
A shift in terminology: from “foundational” to “towards good practice”
In 2025, CMSI updated its terminology to reflect feedback from the first consultation round. The lowest tier, originally called Foundational Practice, is now referred to as “towards good practice.” This change clarifies that the entry level is not a destination but a starting point – a step on the path to good practice rather than a resting place.
By recognising towards good practice, CMSI enables any site to start credibly, then progress to Good and Leading Practice rather than facing a pass/fail hurdle from day one.
