The challenge
In 2024, Repsol engaged Quartex to modernise journey management across its Eagle Ford Shade Operations
The existing process was:
- Paper-based
- Driven by ad hoc communication
- Inconsistent across sites
- Lacking real-time oversight and automated escalation
However, the requirement extended beyond digitisation.
Repsol required:
- Custom navigation aligned to internal travel rules
- Control over private roads, wellpads, and non-gazetted infrastructure
- The ability to define road attributes (vehicle types, speed limits, routing preferences)
- Assurance that sensitive site locations would not be exposed to public mapping platforms
Public navigation tools were not acceptable due to:
- Data usage policies allowing optimisation using user data
- Potential exposure of sensitive operational locations
- Lack of control over route selection logic
In addition, Repsol required:
- A secure, federated authentication model
- Hosting within a U.S.-based environment aligned to internal policy
Repsol initially conducted a formal tender and selected an alternative vendor. Following multiple workshops, it became clear the proposed solution would require building a platform from the ground up rather than deploying a mature system. The approach was deemed non-viable, and Repsol re-engaged Quartex.
The solution
Quartex delivered a bespoke, enterprise-grade solution centred on Quartex JMS, combining digital journey management, private navigation, secure authentication, and dedicated cloud infrastructure.
1. Digital Journey Management
Repsol replaced paper-based workflows with:
- Structured Journey Management Plans (JMPs)
- Risk-based approval workflows
- Automated start, check-in, safe arrival, and escalation notifications
- Full reporting and audit visibility
This standardised journey governance across operations.
2. Private Navigation – Trimble Integration
Following extensive market research, Quartex identified Trimble as the vendor capable of providing:
- Backend creation of private roads and wellpad locations
- Custom road specifications (speed limits, vehicle classes, routing rules)
- A mobile navigation front-end (CoPilot)
- A privacy framework ensuring private infrastructure data remains non-public
Integrated workflow:
- A user creates and receives approval for a JMP in JMS
- When the journey is started, the system hands off to Trimble CoPilot
- Navigation applies private roads, custom routing logic, and Repsol-defined preferred and restricted routes
This ensures personnel travel via routes determined by Repsol — not public algorithms optimising for speed or traffic — while keeping sensitive infrastructure private.
3. Enterprise Infrastructure & Security
Quartex delivered:
- A dedicated AWS environment hosted in the U.S. Northwest region
- A Repsol-specific cloud deployment
- Integration with PingID for authentication and federation
- A fully branded Repsol mobile application
This aligned with Repsol’s global IT and security requirements.
Implementation
Initial rollout of Quartex JMS was supported on-site in Texas across Repsol’s U.S. gas field operations.
Following successful deployment, additional rollouts are planned across United States (additional sites), Peru, Bolivia and Norway.
The result
Repsol now operates with:
- Digitised, standardised journey governance
- Private, policy-aligned navigation control
- Protection of sensitive infrastructure from public mapping platforms
- Secure federated authentication
- A scalable global deployment model
