GISTM compliance 2025: what changed and how Quartex leads


August 2025 was the industry-wide deadline for full conformance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). ICMM member operators committed to disclose facility-level status and action plans by 5 August 2025, bringing a step-change in transparency across tailings governance.

What changed in 2025?

  • Scope widened to all facilities. Earlier cycles prioritised Extreme/Very High consequence facilities; 2025 extended conformance and disclosure to all TSFs. See South32’s tailings page for policy context and timelines.
  • Richer, site-specific transparency. Operators published facility-level status, action plans and periodic reviews in line with Principle 15 (public disclosure). For examples of public transparency hubs, review: BHP, Gold Fields, Newmont.
  • Institutionalised oversight. The Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI) was established to oversee the implementation of and conformance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). Why this matters: disclosure, safety and social licence

GISTM Principle 15 elevates disclosure from ad-hoc reporting to an auditable expectation. Publishing conformance status (and, where needed, clear remedial actions and dates) has materially lifted the quality and comparability of governance artefacts. The convergence of engineering controls, risk management and public transparency strengthens Licence to Operate and improves investor confidence.
