Vehicles killed more Australian workers in 2024 than anything else

Safe work is for life - but the most dangerous part of the job is getting there.

National Safe Work Month

What National Safe Work Month is asking of you

Every October, Safe Work Australia asks workplaces across the country to stop and look hard at how safe their work actually is. Of the 188 workers who died in 2024, 79 were killed in vehicle incidents. Vehicles were involved in 124 deaths in total, around two in three.

For people who drive for work, or drive in and out of site, the risk isn’t waiting at the gate, it’s the hours they spend isolated on the road getting there.

Make every journey visible, safe and controlled

Quartex keeps journeys live from departure to arrival with automatic check-ins, real-time visibility and escalation that fires the moment someone is overdue.

It’s how CR Mining, Martinus Rail and Savanna Energy moved off paper journey plans and manual check-ins. CR Mining alone now covers over 25,000km of employee travel a month.

Safe Work Australia is focusing on a different theme each week in October:

For life: why WHS matters

Know the hazards before and during journeys

For health: what WHS protects

Make the process protect your people

For the future: long term impact

Stay in control the whole way – not only at sign-off

For all: action across all workplaces

Prove your controls worked

Week 1: For life - why WHS matters

WHS exists so everyone gets home.

For your workers on the road, some hazards change while they’re out there. Others are fixed and just easy to get wrong:

Your team sees conditions change and can reroute before a crew drives into one.

Keep your drivers on roads they’re allowed to use.

Week 2: For health - what WHS protects

A good process protects your people and the cost of not having one is high.

Businesses have a duty of care and a serious failure can now be a criminal matter for individuals.
Take the test to see where you stand.

Someone doesn’t come home, or comes home changed. It reaches their family, their income and their future, long after the incident is closed.

Prosecution and personal liability for officers, insurance exposure, lost contracts, and a workforce that stops believing the process is there for them.

road safety - JMP test

Week 3: For the future - the long-term impact

Nobody remembers the journeys that went fine.

Nobody remembers the journeys that went fine. The one that doesn’t has serious impacts on a family, a workforce and a business for years.

See what safeguarding every journey looks like in practice.

Week 4: For all - action across all workplaces

If you have a vehicle on the road, what can you actually show for it?

Many businesses can produce a signed journey plan. Far fewer can produce what happened after it was signed. If that’s you, then it’s worth a 20-minute conversation.

A paper-based or manual journey plan creates gaps in visibility, consistency and compliance and can’t keep pace.

A signed plan tells you what was supposed to happen, but it doesn’t tell you the route they took, whether they checked in, or whether anyone noticed they were late.
