Martinus Rail: digitising journey management for safer, smarter field operations

Learn how a leading rail infrastructure company replaced paper processes with a digital journey management system — improving compliance, visibility and response time across dispersed project teams.

The challenge

Martinus Rail designs, builds and maintains large-scale railways across Australia and international markets. Prior to adopting a digital solution, the company relied on paper-based journey management. Submissions could be missed, practices varied, and travel risk and approvals were largely handled via IVMS tracking — with limited structure around check-ins or escalation pathways.

Key limitations

  • Risk of non-compliance and manual oversight
  • No real-time visibility or audit trail
  • No automated alerts or escalations for missed check-ins or at-risk journeys

The solution

After a successful pilot on a previous project, the Albury to Illabo and Stockinbingal to Parkes teams implemented a digital journey management platform for all Martinus employees driving more than two hours to or from their work locations whilst on roster. Built for remote, complex and high-risk operations, the platform standardised journey planning, automated check-ins and provided real-time escalation pathways — helping safety and project leads maintain a clear line of sight across travelling crews.

What was deployed

  • User-friendly digital journey planning
  • Automated risk assessment, timed check-ins and escalation workflows
  • Full visibility for safety and project leads across the travelling workforce

The onboarding was supported directly by the implementation team. While there was initial resistance from field crews, internal advocates quickly emerged as product champions — demonstrating how easy the platform is to use. With clear safety benefits, adoption grew organically across the project.

The result

  • A fully digital, auditable journey management process
  • Automated check-ins and real-time escalations that reduce manual tracking
  • Faster journey approvals and less administrative overhead
  • Stronger compliance with internal travel safety protocols

The project achieved greater alignment between field operations and safety reporting. Martinus is now progressing towards automated compliance reporting to meet internal and client requirements with minimal effort.

Looking ahead

Following the success of the Inland Rail project, other Martinus projects in Australia, New Zealand and the United States — particularly those involving long-distance driving — are actively exploring the platform to replicate the safety and operational gains achieved to date.

“The platform has transformed the way we manage journey risk on the project. What started as a digital replacement for paper processes has quickly become a critical tool for field safety and compliance visibility. The automated check-ins and escalations have changed the game for our team in the field.”
