In remote, complex and high-risk operations, every journey matters. Whether your workforce travels between mine sites, offshore facilities or regional hubs, effective journey management is vital to protect your people and keep operations running safely.

Why journey management matters

A reliable Journey Management Plan (JMP) provides the visibility and control to ensure every trip is assessed, authorised and tracked – reducing risk at every stage.

For organisations with travelling workforces – particularly in the mining, energy and infrastructure sectors – the risks of fatigue, poor visibility and delayed response are ever-present. A single lapse can impact your workforce, production, community safety and reputation.

Key steps for safer travel

1) Evaluate whether travel is essential

The safest journey is the one not taken. Before approving travel, confirm it’s truly required. If alternatives like ride sharing, rail or charter transport are available, use them to reduce exposure and fatigue.

2) Avoid fatigue hotspots

Plan travel around known fatigue risk periods—typically 2am–6am and 2pm–4pm. If departure in those windows is unavoidable, schedule additional rest breaks or driver rotations.

3) Conduct a risk assessment for every trip

Before departure, verify the driver is fit-for-work (free from fatigue, alcohol or drugs) and check road, traffic and weather conditions. Make these checks systematic with a well-thought-out journey management plan template.

4) Maintain vehicle readiness

Ensure work vehicles are serviced and equipped with emergency essentials: first-aid kit, spare tyre, and communications tools (satellite/4G radios where relevant).

5) Prioritise fatigue management

Encourage rest breaks every two hours and prioritise daylight driving. For extended journeys, share the driving load and plan for rest stops or overnight stays.

6) Log every journey

Record start/end points, route, rest breaks and check-in times. These logs are critical for accountability, reporting and rapid emergency response.

How technology strengthens journey management

Manual processes and spreadsheets can’t keep pace with modern workforce mobility. Quartex’s Journey Management and Navigation solution is a purpose-built solution within our Workforce Management suite which enables:

  • Automated monitoring: capture routes, check-ins and journey progress in real time through GPS and mobile tracking.
  • Real-time alerts: configurable notifications for missed check-ins, overdue journeys or route deviations via SMS, email or push message.
  • Evidence & compliance: comprehensive audit logs, journey records and exportable reports support governance and accountability.
  • Scalable and resilient: designed for remote operations with offline functionality and satellite-enabled communication.

This scalable, robust and practical software strengthens compliance, enhances visibility, and ensures faster response times – so you can get better insights, take smarter actions and see stronger results.
